Dilemma for Drake

PA Wellington The withdrawal of the marathon runner, Glenys Quick, from the New Zealand team for the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games has created a dilemma for Wellington’s Ngaire Drake. Drake is at present in Melbourne preparing to defend her Australian marathon title in Sydney on June 9. She has a best time just

over two minutes outside the Games qualifying standard of 2hr 34min but believes she is capable of getting down to 2hr 34min. “But obviously I am not going to be able to run a really hard race like that and also peak for the games,” she said yesterday. Drake said if she had an indication from the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association that she had a real chance of

inclusion in the team, she would not run in the Australian marathon. Quick pulled out of the team on Tuesday because of a prolapsed disc in her back, an injury which has prevented her from running for two months. The back pain associated with the injury is reportedly so severe that cortisone injections into Quick’s spine have not dulled it sufficiently to allow her to run.
