LION BROWN'S

RACING TIPS

JONNY ALONE has been pulling the wool over the eyes of his followers for some time now but trainer Barry Jones could have him hoodwinked this week. Barry will probably line him up in blinkers to which he responded so well in a recent trial. It wouldn’t be the first time that particular piece of equipment had helped a horse concentrate a bit more and from his place in the weights Jonny 'should win the Fulton Hogan Handicap at Win•gatui tomorrow. Riccarton should take the first leg of the double with CORRIE DOON which Dave Kerr has put a real polish on lately and NOBLE ELLA looks the treble anchor over 2200 m. It took Delarenne to top her last time and she doesn’t mind a bit of moisture either. Skipper Dale will be all ‘the rage in the New Brighton Cup at Addington and he is a good one too but I favour old OUR MANA to topple him. He’s a remarkably consistent old fellow and he sticks on well. The small field will help him. It should help FREIGHTMAN too and on his. trial last week he is going to be hard again. The other good bet of the day looks to be SIR iALBA who was caught parked on a hot pace in the Derby up at Auckland. He’s got a better draw this time and could end his season on a happier note. • In the first of the driver’s races, last year’s Trotting Stakes winner Highwood meets this year’s victor in TOBAGO. Both are pretty good but Tobago may be the more seasoned even though the jace draw has got me a bit ;worried for a hesitant beginner like this fellow. I wouldn’t scoop the jewel-

lery out of the wife’s drawer to put on him. Down south I’ll be showing a bit of interest in the Invercargill trifecta race. I reckon BORDERLINE looks a bit of a sitter here. Now I know he couldn’t really hack it with the Derby types at Addington but there are not many in here who would justify a trip to Addington for anything though I like MISSED AGAIN a bit and reckon CHESTERVILLE could be the upsetter. The Riccarton fields look interesting on Saturday and going by the papers MISTER YORK, trained by Paddy Busuttin. must be some horse. He’s down to run at the Hororata meeting at 1.25 and the Stratford meeting at 4.20. He should be fresher for the first one and it’s not that bright a field. The big race looks a bit tricky to me especially if the track comes up wet. Our Secret Weapon has compressed the weights a bit and I don’t know he’d be quite ready for a race like this. ROYAL SCEPTRE is a useful bet in this sort of race in good conditions for he usually sorts himself out a nice run. His weight is about right too. On a good track I might give VENDEE another chance on her run at Blenheim, for the softish track could have bowled her at Nelson. One of the most interesting races of the day is the second leg. I’d want SATINYS PRIDE if it doesn’t rain and JARROW if it does and I reckon if you couple up the top four weighted in a quinella you couldn’t miss. The other horse which should win is the maiden PESTLE in the fourth for she should only get better on her last effort.
