M.P.s give ‘rebels’ support
Wellington reporter A telegram of support to the “rebel" rugby players in South Africa was sent yesterday by the National member of Parliament for Ashburton, Mr Rob Talbot. He wished them success on the tour and said he was sure they would uphold “the great traditions” of New Zealand’s “national sport.” Mr Talbot was one of four Opposition members to give the rebels support yesterday. The three Southland members — Messrs Rex Austin (Awarua), Norman Jones (Invercargill), and Derek Angus (Wallace) — joined to send two supportive telegrams. In the telegram addressed to the team they support the right of individual players to make their own decisions on sports contacts and wished them every success. In the telegram addressed to Steve Pokere, a former Southlander, they repeated the same message, wished him a successful and enjoyable tour, and ended with “Beat the Boks” — described by the three members of Parliament as their motto.
