Shipping news Hero tug returning
A hero of the Wahine disaster in 1968, the tug Tapuhi, will be back in Wellington within a few weeks for restoration as a floating museum and restaurant. The 245-tonne Tapuhi, one of the biggest tugs built in Britain, was Wellington’s main heavy tug from 1947 to 1973. For the last seven years, she has lain rusting in a creek in Vanuatu after finishing a salvage operation. A Wellington businessman, Mr Clem Griffiths, said that the Tapuhi would be towed to New Zealand by a Fijian salvage company. During the Wahine disaster, in which 51 people died, the tug was the only vessel capable of getting close to the foundering ferry. Breaking lines foiled the tug’s attempts to pull the ship into shallower water, but the Tapuhi rescued 178 of the Wahine passengers and crew from the water round Barretts Reef.
