Mr O’Flynn to visit Canberra for talks
PA Wellington The Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn, will visit Canberra next week for discussions with his Australian counterpart, Mr Beazley. Mr O’Flynn said he looked forward to the talks on April 29 and 30. “There can be no doubting the importance of defence collaboration between Australia and New Zealand. It is fundamental,” he said. “We have been greatly heartened by recent statements by Mr Beazley of the importance of the New Zealand-Australian relationship.” The talks were ex-
pected to focus on coordination of activities in the South Pacific, progress on the defence reviews being undertaken in both countries, joint exercises, training and equipment purchasing and the broad strategic position in the region. Mr O’Flynn said he would be accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Sir Ewan Jamieson, and the Secretary of Defence, Mr Denis McLean. After the Canberra talks he would take up Mr Beazley’s invitation to visit Australian defence establishments in the north.
