Ambassador appointed

PA Wellington Mr Gordon Parkinson has been appointed New Zealand Ambassador to Jakarta. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Lange, said Mr Parkinson would succeed Mr Michael Powles, who would return to Wellington. Indonesia was New Zealand’s closest Asian neigh-

bour and it occupied a strategic position across some of the world’s main trade routes, Mr Lange said. “There are many advantages to be derived from developing closer links with Indonesia, and my recent visit there was designed to build on the good relations that already exist,” he said. “Mr Parkinson is taking

up his appointment at a time when we shall give higher priority to strengthening the bilateral relationship.” Mr Parkinson, aged 51, has been New Zealand’s Ambassador in Rome since March, 1983. He has served in San Francisco, Singapore, Bangkok, Paris and Lima where he was ambassador from 1978 to 1980.
