West Coast cattle drop $lOO a head

The reality of present beef prices struck West Coast cattle breeders at last week’s Totara Flat cattle sale where prices were down more than $lOO a head from last year’s rates. The cattle were presented in forward condition and most vendors were prepared to meet the market’s level. Medium quality calves looked good buying and sold at a sizeable discount from the top lines. Good steer calves from Hill Brothers, Ngahere, topped the market at $320 to $3OO. Similar calves last year fetched over $420. Most medium heifer calves sold at $145 to $l6O and an attractive pen from Peter Bruce, Ahaura, reached $192. Buyers from most parts of the West Coast were present, but the sale attracted little interest from outside the district.

Sales included:— Steers: M. Birchfield (Kopara), Herefords at $248 to $266, Hereford-Angus cross at $242; Hill Brothers (Ngahere), Herefords at $3OO to $304, Hereford-Angus cross at $320, Shorthorn cross at $316; P. Bruce (Ahaura), Herefords at $238; Ikamatua Sawmills (Ikamatua), Herefords at $232; C. Cowan (Barrytown), Herefords at $270; T. Hahn (Ahaura), Angus at $203, Murray Grey cross at $206; Hahn Brothers (Ahaura), Hereford-Angus cross at $224. Heifers: M.
