Man on counts of fraud involving $90,000

Interim suppression of name for a man facing eight charges of fraud, involving $90,000, was declined by Judge Frampton in the District Court yesterday. Roydon Blair Granger, aged 34 (Mr Erno Bedo), was remanded on bail of $l5OO to May 5 to allow counsel to investigate the “somewhat complicated circumstances” involved.

Granger is charged with committing the offences between September last year and March this year in Christchurch and at Dunedin and Petone.

The charges relate to the fraudulent purchase of seven vehicles ranging in price between $BOOO and $16,000. BURGLARY OFFENCES

An unemployed man who twice broke into the same Hargood Street premises last month told police he had been bored and was not getting enough money on the dole, said Detective Sergeant Neil Scott. Campbell Waata Wiki, aged 22, was convicted and remanded in custody to April 28, for a probation report and sentence. Detective Sergeant Scott

said the complainant’s house was burgled by the defendant on March 6 and 14. Property valued at $2500 was stolen. The bulk of the property was recovered when the police executed a search warrant at the defendant’s address.

Detective Sergeant Scott said the defendant had been walking past the house in Hargood Street on the night of March 6. Seeing the premises in darkness, Wiki threw a stone through a window. When this evoked no response he went and removed a video before being disturbed by the owner.

On the second occasion Wiki broke in he stole 40 video tapes and some clothing. Compensation of $5OO was sought in respect of unrecovered property.

BURGLARY CHARGE Bail was set at $2OOO for a woman charged with breaking and entering Henry Africa’s Restaurant in Stanmore Road on April 20. The woman, Tui Evelyn Devlin, aged 30, unemployed, is also charged with the unlawful posses-

sion by night of instruments capable of being used to commit burglary. She was remanded to May 5. REMAND IN CUSTODY Because of police concern for the safety of the female complainant, Hugh Campbell Galbraith, aged 60, a driver, was remanded in custody to April 28. Galbraith is charged that being a male he assaulted a female, assaulting the same female, unlawfully masking his face by night, and unlawful possession of a softball bat in circumstances that showed an intention to use it to commit an offence involving the fear of violence. No pleas were entered by the defendant, who is charged with committing the offences between March 8 and April 20. In opposing bail, Detective Sergeant Scott said that while it was a domes-tic-type situation, which the defendant had not accepted, there was concern for the safety of the complainant should Galbraith be released on bail.

NINE MONTHS JAIL It would be "sheer folly” to exercise any further leniency to a man appearing for sentence on charges of burglary, unlawfully taking a motorvehicle, and dangerous driving, said the Judge. Dean Waaka Nathan, aged 19, (Mr Bedo), was jailed for nine months, and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for 12 months. A variety of sentences had been tried with Nathan since 1981, the Judge said. In 1984, he was given a prison term of 18 months for burglary, yet on February 21 “the sentencing clock was put back” with the imposition of a sentence of periodic detention on another offence. Yet within one month of this the defendant was back offending again. Mr Bedo said of the burglary that it had occurred while his client was under the influence of drugs. The burglary was committed because Nathan wanted some tobacco, he said.
