Lord Louie wins trial
Last year’s New Brighton Cup winner, Lord Louie, continued his preparation for this year’s renewal on Friday with a win in 3:26.7 (2600 m at the Rangiora trials yesterday. The Lordship gelding has not had a happy
season, failing to win in 20 starts, but has a runner’s chance on Friday. Yesterday’s effort followed up a second to Freightman in 3:21.7 for the same distance at last Wednesday’s Addington trials.
Montrose, which will make a fresh start in the $7500 Eastwood Lodge 2000 for fillies and mares over 2000 m (mobile) on Friday, finished second yesterday, with Motu Jodi and Jack Hammer, next. Other winners of the barrier trials over 2600 m were: Embark (Cl and faster pace, 3:33.5), Miss Tennessee (Cl and faster trot, 3:35.2), Medicine Man (CO pace, 3:29.7), Iffy Tryax (CO pace, 3:31.5), Scottish Pine (CO pace, 3:31.4), Game Magic (CO trot, 3:39.3) and Squibbly Dee (two-year-old pace, 2200 m, 3:1,2). Dardanus, a two-year-old Nat Lobell colt from Wikitoria in Leicester Tatterson’s Rangiora team, was the quickest qualifier over 2400 m. The half-brother to Saryan gained his ticket in 3:13.4. Other pacers to qualify over 2400 m (stand) were: Mates Rates (3:14.2), Reagan’s Row (3:145, Deltron (3:14.7), Le Marais (3:14.8), Roman Rule (3:15.1), Sweet Rule (3:15.6) and Black Douglas (3:16.5). Pacers to qualify over 2600 m (mobile) were Lopez Lord (3:29.4) and Fifteen Seconds (3:29.5).
