NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed slightly easier as continued strong demand for quality Industrial stocks was offset by a weaker resources sector, brokers said. The all-ordinaries index slipped 0.2 points from Friday’s record close to 1218.3 after peaking at a record 1223.3 in early trading. The all-industrials index gained 8.4 points from Friday’s peak to new record close of 1991.6, while the all-resources index fell 6.1 points to 634.5. The gold index finished 2.6 points firmer at 920.2. National turnover was 62.4 M shares worth sAustlO6.6M, with rises outnumbering falls 275 to 211. BHP finished steady at 736 after jumping 14c to a high of 748 in the first hour. Bell Resources fell 20c to 500 while the Bell Group gained 6c to 816. Elders IXL gained 8c to 460 on turnover of 1.7 M shares, including two special sales of I.IM and 300,000 at 457.
