Shipping news Keel laid for new tug

A Shinto priest officiated at a ceremony in Nagasaki, Japan, when the keel was laid for the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s new tug recently. The ceremony was attended by the board’s senior assistant engineer, Mr N. R. McLennan, who told the board that the ceremony was conducted on a specially prepared and erected dais above the slipway where the tug’s forward ballast tank had been constructed. Mr McLennan’s role was that of watching the welding of the ship’s number, 1007, on the top of the ballast tank. He also laid a green-leafed wreath on a shrine, the action being repeated by the president of the Nagasaki Shipyard Company and other leading officials. Mr McLennan was in Nagasaki for discussions with shipbuilding officials on the construction of the new vessel. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Auckland (N.Z.S.A.).
