Club tightens security
PA Auckland Security at a number of Auckland rugby clubs has been tightened in the wake of the “rebel” tour of South Africa and an arson bld on a city grandstand. Club officials say the moves follow up similar steps taken last year in the stormy build-up to the
aborted official All Black tour of South Africa. Security guards stay x overnight at the Ponsonby clubrooms, according to senior officials. One of the prominent “rebel” players, Andy Haden, is a Ponsonby member. Other clubs have also taken precautions, but are reluctant to discuss them, according to top officials.
The executive director of the Auckland Rugby Union, Mr Lew. Pryme, has appealed for opponents of the rebel tour to respect the position adopted by the union. The union had for two years consistently opposed tours of South Africa by New Zealand teams, he said.
