Diplomatic change
PA Wellington A Trade and Industry Department official, Mr Gerard Thompson, will be the new Ambassador to Belgium. He will take up the position in mid-year, and
will be cross-accredited to Denmark, Luxemburg and the European Community. Mr Thompson joined the department in 1964. He has previously been posted in Paris and twice
in London, most recently from 1976 to 1980 as minister (commercial). On returning to Wellington he became director of trade policy, with responsibility for Australia and multilateral work.
In 1981 he was appointed assistant secretary, trade policy, and was heavily involved in discussions on the Closer Economic Relations agreement with Australia.
