Shuttle crew’s remains found
NZPA-Reuter Cape Canaveral The final remains of the crew of the space shuttle Challenger had been found and searches for the crew cabin completed, the United States space agency announced yesterday. Rear-Admiral Richard Truly, the agency’s associate administrator for space flight, said that the “long and arduous at-sea operation” was a success.
Remains of the crew compartment, which
plunged into the Atlantic Ocean after the shuttle lift-off on January 29, were discovered in 30 metres of water northeast of Cape Canaveral on March 8.
Apart from brief periods of bad weather, United States Navy divers have been in the water every day searching for the seven crew members’ remains.
The final disposition of the remains would be “in accordance with family wishes,” Admiral Truly said.
