Halley’s Comet
Halley’s Comet will be 76deg above the horizon and 23deg from north at 10 p.m. today. (East is 90deg, south is 180 deg, and west is 270 deg.) When viewed from Christchurch at midnight, the comet will be 296 deg from north and 67deg above the horizon. At 2 a.m. it will be 268 deg from north at an altitude of 45deg, and at 4 a.m. will be 250 deg from north and 24deg above the horizon. The comet will have dropped to lOdeg above the horizon at 5.25 a.m., 238 deg from north. Co-ordinates for Nelson, Ashburton and Greymouth are similar and should be reached a few minutes later when those given for Christchurch.
