Burnside, Carlton, Harewood win
Burnside I, Carlton, and Liquorland Harewood all won their second-round matches in the New Zealand Permanent Building Society’s senior women’s hockey championship on Saturday.
For the second successive week the hapless young Hornby team was beaten by a double-figure score. Carlton netted 10 goals against it. Harewood maintained its place at the head of the championship with a 3-0 win against Burnside 11. Selwyn earned its first points of the season with a 3-0 win against Pegasus. The match between
Woolston and Burnside I was deferred. Woolston has three players in the New Zealand team playing in Sydney. The match is planned for May 4. Carlton v. Hornby Shirley Haig, the Carlton player-coach, enjoyed a fruitful day at the expense of the Hornby defence. She scored eight of her side’s 10 goals and showed that the responsibility of being player-coach is not hindering her play. Members of the Canterbury team will hope she is in the same dynamic form when she fills the same role at the Champions tournament for the top six provincial teams next week-end in Wellington. Carlton had too much speed and skill for Hornby
which was never off the back foot. The score would have been even greater if Carlton had managed to score from any of the three penalty strokes it was awarded. Two were well saved by the agile Hornby goal-keeper, Julia Fitzgerald. Vicki Inch and . Sue Edmondson, both members of the skilful Carlton forward line, each scored a goal. Harewood v. Burnside This match never reached great heights. Burnside II had to defend much of the time against a more experienced and better drilled opponent. The bumpy ground did not help the flow of play and made trapping a difficult exercise.
Maree Flannery gave Harewood a comfortable lead by the interval by scoring two goals, but after the interval the standard dropped as passes went astray and the trapping deteriorated further. Lynn . Schulz scored the only goal of the half after she found a gap in the solid Burnside defence. Harewood had the ball in the net from a penalty corner but the ( goal was disallowed because the ball had not been stopped dead before the shot was taken. Selwyn v. Pegasus Selwyn, because of its superior depth of experience, won this match, but the Pegasus team showed spirit and a willingness to attack rather
than spend much of its time on defence. Nicky Sherriff put Selwyn ahead early in the first half with a superb shot from the top of the circle. Pegasus had difficulty obtaining enough possession in the mid-field to put significant pressure on the Selwyn defence. Its attacks were only sporadic. Selwyn’s second goal was the result of an excellent build-up and Trish Harte deflected a cross into the goal. Selwyn had a number of good scoring chances in the second half, but could finish only one of them. The goal was scored by Pip Wilson.
