Hockey tourists struggle

NZPA-AAP Sydney The United States scored its second win in two matches to swamp New Zealand, 3-1, in the Esanda international women’s hockey tournament at Homebush, Sydney, on Saturday.

But the United States coach, Boudewin Castelijn, was far from pleased with his team’s effort.

“We’re hurrying too much and there’s simply not enough control in the midfield,” he said. “If we don’t improve Canada will kill us.” The United States be-

gan well when Christy Morgan scored a goal in the first minute, and Megan Donnelly made it 2-0 in converting a penalty corner shortly before half-time.

New Zealand struck back with a Mary Clinton goal in the forty-eighth minute. The United States sealed the match two minutes from time when Marcia Pankratz scrambled home a shot from close range.

The New Zealand coach, Wayne Boyd, was upset after the match. “You can’t expect to

win international hockey matches if you miss the opportunities we did today,” said Boyd. New Zealand has yet to score a win in the sixnation series and Boyd’s aim of finishing in the top four is beginning to look a little shaky.

Australia beat New Zealand 2-1 on Friday evening, and the Australian under-21 team went down gallantly, 1-0, to the United States.

Korea sprang the first big upset of the tournament with a 3-2 win over the highly-rated Canada on Friday evening.
