Taylor back in squad
Ross Taylor, who toured Britain and France with the 1985 Kiwis, has been added to the Canterbury squad for the Rugby League Cup defence against Waikato at the Show Grounds on Thursday evening. Only a few weeks ago Taylor had not expected to play at all this season because of complications to the broken wrist he suffered while representing New Zealand
against St Helens in England.
But Taylor resumed football in the premier B grade for his Hornby club, and Canterbury’s co-selec-tor and coach, Ray Haffenden, was obviously satisfied with the Kiwi prop forward’s fitness and form against Parklands on Saturday.
The opportunity to reinstate Taylor to the provincial squad came when the
first-choice reserve forward, Robbie Rushton (Halswell), was ordered off in a club match nine days ago and subsequently suspended until after May 17.
Rushton’s club has appealed, and the hearing will be held tonight. Taylor is the sixteenth man in the Canterbury squad, but will become the reserve forward if the rest of Rushton’s suspension is not quashed.
