Wetlands case ‘reassuring’

Wellington reporter No decision has been made by the Government yet on how wetlands might be dealt with in the water and soil legislation. The Minister of Works, Mr Colman, said the recent Court of Appeal decision in the Whangamarino Swamp case had gone some way towards reassuring the public that the values of wetlands could be given due weight in the water right process. Whether it was necessary or appropriate for the water and soil legislation to go further was another matter, he told the annual conference of the Catchment Authorities’ Association at Gisborne. Other possibilities were to include wetlands on the

Schedule of Protected Waters, or to allow water conservation orders to be applied for over wetlands,

or to give their protection greater weight in the objectives of the Water and Soil Conservation Bill.
