Culverden calf prices ease

Most good quality steer calves sold between $230 and $290 at the second Culverden calf sale yesterday. A big yarding of calves and the declining beef export schedule contributed to a slight easing in demand compared with calf sales earlier this season, but the market generally remained satisfactory. Seven pens of steers from a total of more than 60 pens sold for $3OO or more. At last season’s corresponding sale, when calf prices were extremely buoyant and the yarding was much smaller, about half the steers exceeded $3OO. The calves were in excellent order, having benefited from the lush pasture growth this season.

Top price was $350 for a pen of Angus steers from W. S. Gardner, Waiau, followed by $340 for the top drafting of Angus-Hereford first-cross steers from H. R. Hammond, Culverden. Last season’s top price for Mr Hammond’s calves was $402.

Other big lines of steers to attract keen interest were Herefords from the Northcote Trust, Waiau, which sold to $334, and Herefords from the Lakes Partnership, Lake Sumner, which reached $3OO.

The yarding totalled 2064 (1071 last year), and comprised 1255 steers and 809 heifers.
