Laser Lad wins Northern Derby
PA Auckland Laser Lad continued the outstanding, run this season of his trainer, Peter Jones, when he proved too strong for the favourite, Alba’s Reign, in the Auckland Trotting club’s $150,000 Lion Brown Northern Derby at Alexandra Park last evening. Jones also trained and drove Borana to win the $250,000 Toyota New Zealand Cup in November. Drjy-en by Jones, Laser Lad
overpowered Alba’s Reign in the run home and strode to the line a length and a half clear of his rival. Imperial Time, a stablemate of Laser Lad, almost made it a perfect result for Jones by finishing third just half a head away. Laser Lad’s time of 3:24.6 for the 2700 m sliced four tenths of a second off the national record for three-year-olds. The previous best was set by Mei’s Boy in the 1982 Gjeat Northern Derby.*,
