Judge adjourns mine inquiry

PA Westport A judge adjourned an inquiry yesterday so that he could visit a mine similar to the Boatmans No. 4 where four miners died last September. Judge D. B. Pain had been told by a witness on the first day of the inquiry, William Barry Byrne, that the Boatmans mine, about 12km north of Reefton, was now completely sealed. He decided to visit a similar mine and later viewed the area round Boatmans. The four men who died in the Boatmans mine after a fire were Wayne Neville, Ashley Bang,

Lindsay Kiely and Thomas Laird. The Inspector of Mines at Westport, Mr Bill Brazil, gave evidence that Boatmans had been producing 50 tonnes of coal a day, crushed to size and pumped to the surface through a four-inch pipe by an electrically operated pump. He said he had discussed an area of the mine which could have been extremely difficult to contain in a fire, with the mine manager on August, 1984. At this stage the court adjourned for the mine visit. The hearing will resume on Monday.
