Logging stops

Forest Service logging of a proposoed West Coast reserve has ceased and a decision about logging of another proposed reserve is likely early next week, according to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Environment and Conservation, Mr Philip Woollaston. Logging gangs came out of the Slabhut Creek area, west of Reefton, soon after Mr Woollaston’s aerial inspection of the area and the nearby Giles Creek proposed reserve area. Both have been recommended by the Wildlife Service and D.S.I.R. as part of a proposed wildlife corridor to enable native birds to move between seasonal habitats and maintain a wide genetic pool.
