This training intake is intended for persons who do not hold a social work qualification but who do have training, experience or educational qualifications in relevant fields. Suitable applicants will be appointed as trainees and will undertake a 12-month structured programme of learning that includes on-the-job training and 6 weeks of residential training (broken into two parts) at the Department Residential Staff Training School at Levin. Free accommodation will be provided at the Training Centre and reasonable travelling expenses will be met. Trainee Residential Social Workers in the Department of Social Welfare are appointed at the appropriate point on a scale offering annual increments. Appointees will initially have supernumerary status, but as training proceeds absorption into suitable vacancies will occur. The Psychologist will be expected to be part of a multi-discip-linary team assisting young people to develop life skills for their successful placement in the community. The Psychologist will be expected to work directly with young people in the areas of assessment and intervention and also to knowledge and skills in the areas of evaluation, research, programme development and staff training.
