Woollen mill staff return

Woollen workers at Alliance Textiles, Ltd, in Timaru returned to work yesterday, and those in Christchurch and Otago will do so on Monday. Mr Andy Lea of the Canterbury branch of the Woollen Workers’ Union, said Timaru members had accepted an 18.3 per cent pay increase. The union had recommended that woollen workers in Christchurch and Otago accept the same settlement. More than 2000 woollen workers throughout New Zealand went on strike last week in support of their claim for a 22 per cent increase. The employers had offered 15.7 per cent, but had negotiated a settlement with North Island workers on Wednesday.
