The Board is responsible for the provision of hospital and associated extramural services for a catchment population of about 130,000 and maintains general acute hospitals at Napier (360 beds), and Hastings (296 beds) and a 140 bed community hospital at Wairoa. The Board office is based at Napier. The Medical Superintendent-in-Chief will be a member of the Board’s executive committee, together with the Chief Executive and Chief Nurse. As part of this team, the Medical Superintendent-in-Chief will advise the Board on matters relating to the planning, management and evaluation of the Board’s medical and related clinical services. Preference will be given to applicants who are recognised specialists in the field of community medicine, although applications from persons with experience in the field of medical administration or having other management qualifications in the health field, will be considered. Proven experience in the management of hospital services would be an advantage. The salary will be in accordance with the scale for specialist medical officers, ranging from $52,600 to $66,400 with additional steps for merit, up to $87,500.
