General forecast: A large anticyclone over the Tasman Sea is moving slowly towards New Zealand. District forecasts: Canterbury: Mainly fine, cool, moderate northeasterlies. Marlborough: Mainly fine, cool, moderate southwesterlies on the Kaikoura coast, light winds elsewhere. Nelson, Buller: Fine, light winds, mild afternoon. Westland: Light variable winds, fine.

Extended range forecast to Friday: Tomorrow and Thursday fine milder weather, winds turning northerly and cooler southerlies spreading north with scattered showers; Nelsori, Buller, Westland: Fine tomorrow, not much wind. Rain developing in Westland on Thursday, spreading to Buller and Nelson Friday, followed by clearing skies and cool southerlies in Westland.
