Players fly to Hong Kong

NZPA Sydney New Zealand’s “rebel” rugby players left Sydney yesterday morning for Hong Kong where they are due to catch a flight direct to Johannesburg, according to Sydney airline sources.

The group is believed to be flying on the Hong Kong airline, Cathay Pacific, which left Sydney at 10.35 a.m., and flew on to Melbourne, where it left early this afternoon for Asia.

The 16 New Zealanders arrived in two batches from Wellington and Christchurch on Sunday evening, and after refusing to comment to waiting

news media left for a hotel near Sydney Airport Three more players were due to arrive from Wellington yesterday morning, but the flight was delayed and did not arrive until after 12.30 p.m. The fate of that trio is not known, although there were two mid-after-noon flights to Singapore from where they could make connections. Their move came as the anti-apartheid movement yesterday afternoon called on unions in the transport, airline and hotel industries to deny services to the New Zealanders, and also to the New South Wales Rugby Union.
