Southland to march

PA Invercargill Invercargill is expected to be invaded by thousands of country people today when the Southland Federated Farmers’ sponsored “Rally of Concern” takes to the city’s streets. The provincial president, Mr Lionel Patterson, said last evening the feeling was that a “tremendous crowd” would take part.

The rally was intended to state clearly to the Government the deep-felt concern of Southland people about the economic depression and the Government’s handling of the economy, he said. “We have had all sorts of support from people from all walks of life,” Mr Patterson said. The Mayor of Invercargill, Mrs Eve Poole, will

lead the march with Mr Patterson and other provincial rural leaders. “As Mayor of the city, I am joining the march because I am of the opinion that the monetary policies of the Government have seriously affected the downturn in the province’s economy and have brought the farming community to its knees,” Mrs Poole said.
