Absconder found by police
An absconder from the Stanmore Road Boys’ Home, who has been charged with the attempted rape of a woman, aged 74, was found by the Christchurch police last evening. The boy, aged 14, was at an address in central Christchurch, said a police spokesman. He was expected to be returned to the home.
The boy absconded from Social Welfare custody on Monday, for the second time since he was arrested last month. The
same day he had appeared in the Children and Young Persons Court and was remanded in the custody of the Social Welfare Department for a defended hearing on March 27.
He has denied charges of assaulting the woman with intent to rape her, and theft of $l9, a transistor radio, and sewing equipment. During the hearing, the prosecution strongly opposed bail, saying that the police evidence was very strong.
