Jail for kicking woman on ground

PA Wellington A man who knocked a woman to the ground then kicked her in the head while wearing his work boots has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.

Dean Rodger Maui, aged 37, unemployed, of Petone, had earlier pleaded guilty in the District Court at Lower Hutt to assault in Masterton on January 7.

The Court was told that Maui and the woman had been walking along a road when an argument developed. He had punched her

in the face with closed fists and kicked her in the head when she fell down. Later he had punched her again before she went to a house to summon help.

The woman was treated in hospital but not admitted.

Counsel, Miss Vai Sim, said Maui and the complainant had re-estab-lished their relationship. “The Court is simply not prepared to tolerate vicious and violent assaults,” said Judge Carruthers, in sentencing Maui to a year’s jail.
