Game Park to close
Timaru reporter
The Hadlow Game Park will close at the end of this month. The owner of
the park, Mr Bryan Bas-sett-Smith, said the animals would either be sold or given to trusts. He intends retaining deer on his Hadlow farm and will also export wallabies.
Mr Bassett-Smith suggested to the Timaru City Council that a game park could be established in the city’s Centennial Reserve. However, after a
feasibility study, the coun-
cil decided this week that such a venture would be uneconomic. The cost of buying Mr Bassett-Smith’s animals and setting up the game park would have been $500,000 with an annual budgeted shortfall of $70,000. The council is keen to see Centennial Reserve developed as a recreational area. A caravan park with amusement devices could be established there in the future.
