Royal Yacht arrives at Lyttelton

The Royal Yacht Brittannia was greeted by about 300 people when she arrived at Lyttelton early yesterday morning. The Sumner Road proved popular for sightseers as did No. 4 wharf in the inner harbour where members of the public got a fine view of the Royal Yacht going alongside the oil wharf to refuel.

The Britannia berthed soon after 9 a.m., ending a smooth-running entrance that had begun about an hour earlier off Godley Head. She was piloted by the Lyttelton Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour. The Britannia was escorted from Auckland to the Lyttelton Heads by H.M.N.Z.S. Waikato. The Waikato then left the Royal Yacht when her. fellow naval vessels H.M.N.Z.S. HaWea and H.M.N.Z.S. Kiwi took over escort duties.

The two ships sailed either side of the Britannia and escorted her inside the harbour.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s two tugs Godley

and Canterbury then joined the formation, going in next to the Britannia. The two tugs escorted Britannia into her initial berth while the Band of the Royal Marines aboard the Royal Yacht played selections. She was dressed with flags and pennants just after 9 a.m. 10 minutes before she was secure.

The Britannia moved to No. 4 wharf later in the day and will remain there until Sunday, when she will leave.

The Waikato came in to berth later.

Security was relatively low-key for the arrival of the Britannia. Police manned a checkpoint at the shoreward end of No. 4 wharf and divers checked the Britannia’s berth before she arrived. A small party of soldiers got an early view of the Britannia from Godley - Head. The 12member squad was on a training exercise when she sailed past.

The few small craft that ventured on the water kept well clear of the formation. On shore a crowd gathered to watch the vessel come through the moles, including several classes from the Lyttelton Main School.
