Silver Elm in fine fettle

Special correspondent Palmerston North

Silver Elm looked in fine fettle, for the UDC Finance at Trentham tomorrow when she galloped at Awapuni yesterday morning.

The mare seems well weighted with 52.5 and her work this week suggests she will go a bold race for leading rider David Walsh.

Auto Air got through his final gallop in fine style for the Sovereign Lodge Wakefield, and Irish Piper was another to enhance his Trentham prospects. Working on the Inside trial, Silver Elm and Bidston Hill ran 1400 metres together in Imin 31s, the last 600 m in 39s and it was solid work. Silver Elm has never been better and should go close at Trentham. Bidston Hill is in the same race. He took no harm from his Hastings run and with a good past record behind him at Trentham he has to be respected. Auto Air ran easily over 800 m in 535, the last 600 m in 39.45. He was never at top and looks on his way to win No. 7 for the season in the Wakefield. His clash with rising star Yenolom will be of much interest. Fiddler’s Three and Santaray, both preparing for later days at Trentham, were impressive running 1000 m in Imln 4s, the last 600 m in 38s. They could shine next week as

long as the track provides firm footing. Tregenna was never at top running 1000 m in Imin 6.45, the final 600 m in 40.45. He is right at his best for the Grigg Mazda at Trentham after a good race here behind Regal Visit.

Super Tai and Royal Dee left 1200 m behind in Imin 16.65, the last 600 m in 395. It’s a long time since Super Tai had only 51.5 s on his back but that’s the weight he will carry in the Golden Mile on Saturday. He has run some good races at Trentham.

Magnitude, preparing for the Lion Brown on the last day, went evenly over 800 m in 555, the last 600 m in 40.65. He is right at his peak. Sir Vigilant and Sovereign Parade ran 800 m in 535, the last 600 m in 395. Sovereign Parade has come back better than ever. He will have a run at the Foxton trials next week.

Margarella, fit for the Wakefield and a real chance in the event, went over 800 m with Soubrette in 535, the last 600 m in 40s. Margarella has done well since racing at Woodville.

Infantry and Cuspidor covered 1200 m in Imin 18s, the last 600 m in 38.65. Both are fit for the UDC Finance with Infantry in particular looking a winning chance. Mark Barnsley rides him.
