Glenmark position

Farmers have irrigated land successfully this season from eight of the 10 storage dams in the Glenmark irrigation scheme, according to Mr Bruce Yates, engineer for the Hurunui County Council. The two dams not being used for irrigation were storing water satisfactorily but the farmers on these two properties had not installed on-farm reticulation, he said. Mr Yates was commenting on a report in “The Press” last Friday dealing with leakage problems from several of the scheme’s storage dams. The National Water and

Soil Conservation Authority will soon consider reports from engineering consultants and the Ministry of Works on the scheme. Mr Yates said only twodams were leaking at a rate which would require minor work to repair. The worst leakage rate was 25 mm per day. The Glenmark scheme was first mooted in 197172 and construction started in 1980. The National Authority at its next meeting will consider the availability of money to complete stage one of the scheme, said Mr Yates.
