AUSTRALIA Bargain hunters busy

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed slightly firmer in mixed trading with bargain hunters pushing up a bearish market in the face of negative news from abroad, brokers said. Near the close of trading, the all ordinaries index had risen 0.1 point to 1047.0, the all resources 1.7 to 602.7, and the gold index 0.5 to 926.5. The all Industrials lost 2.2 to 1629.6. Turnover was 60M shares worth $91.5M, with falls outnumbering rises by 269 to 217. Brokers also said the uncertainty surrounding Bell Resources’ partial take-over bid for BHP and the Victorian Supreme Court’s decision on North Broken Hill shares had created a nervous market BHP again came under selling pressure following the Federal Government’s cut in fuel prices. The stock closed 4c down at 650 on turnover of 1.6 M.
