Teller stole cash from P.O. till
PA Auckland A Post Office teller who stole $2086 cash from her till told the police she believed her mother would be angry if she had not. Annie Betham, aged 22, of One Tree Hill, appeared in the District Court at Auckland yesterday, where she admitted three charges of theft as a servant. Judge Gilbert convicted her and remanded her on bail to March 27 for sentence. Detective Sergeant Don Sara said Betham worked at the Oranga Post Office.
On November 29, she was
paid wages for another teller by mistake, but spent the money on Christmas presents and repaid the postmistress from her till. On December 23 she took $7OO cash, and gave it to her mother for a recently purchased car. On December 24, Betham took a further $lOOO and gave it to a friend who was travelling to Samoa. Betham said in explanation that she had tight financial commitments and thought her mother would be angry if she did not steal some money from work.
