Award to artist
PA Wellington The 1986 Allan Highet Award of $25,000, the biggest monetary award in New Zealand to an individual, has been granted to a Northland artist, Cliff Whiting. Whiting is a central figure in the contemporary Maori art world. He is a painter, carver, printmaker, illustrator and
photographer. He works as an adviser to the Historic Places Building Trust and the Interim Committee on Cultural Property. The Allan Highet Award was created by the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council in 1984 to provide recognition and support for mid-career artists with ability and clear potential.
