Yabbie-farm proposal
PA Timaru An Australian man is planning s to spend 575#,000 to create a farm for imported Australian freshwater crayfish near Temuka if he can get planning permission. Mr Sidney Buckland plans to breed yabbies, the Australian marron crayfish, in irrigation ponds, in what he said would be the first venture of its type in- New Zealand.
,He planned to import
six or seven dozen mar-, ron, which he would breed until he had about 50,900. Mr Buckland said breeding was difficult, as the marron were cannibalistic, so it was necesary to size them in various ponds. The Strathalian County Council has reserved its decision on his application to excavate five ponds for breeding, stock-watering, and irrigation. x
