Meat works closed
Export meat works throughout New Zealand were closed yesterday as meat workers and tradesmen began their strike for a better pay offer from the companies. Freezing company clerical workers are still at work, although they too have rejected the’offer by the companies of a $25 a wjtek wage
Some clerical staff in the North Island were suspended yesterday as work ran out and a spokesman for the Meat Industry Association said from Wellington that companies would suspend more as work ran out. of the Freezing Clerical Officers’ Union are expected to begin meetings next to
discuss the breakdown in their award talks. Meat workers may have been eligible for the unemployment benefit if' they had stayed at work and been suspended as work ran out, instead of joining tradesmen at work, but by going on strike they are deemed to be ineligible for the benefit because they are “voluntarily” unemployed.
