Walkabout tomorrow fine chance to see Queen

The Queen will begin her seventh visit to Christchurch, and Prince Philip his tenth, tomorrow afternoon.

Christchurch residents should have plenty of opportunity to see the Royal couple. The main chance will be during the walkabout in Cathedral Square and Worcester Street tomorrow.

The Queen and Prince Philip will stop in the Square for 20 minutes on their way from the airport to H.M.Y. Britannia at Lyttelton. With the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and Lady Hay and the Associate Minister of Finance, Mr David Caygill, and Mrs Caygill, the Royal couple will walk

along a corridor in front of Christchurch Cathedral and along Worcester Street to its intersection with Oxford Terrace. The informal walk was the highlight of the Queen’s last visit to Christchurch in October, 1981. About 3000 people crammed into the Square, lining the route six deep, to see the Royal couple. A special area has been set aside in front of the Cathedral and along the grass to the north for elderly people and the disabled during tomorrow’s walkabout. The Royal couple will walk the length of this area and down the steps in front of the Cathedral.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow the north-west

sector of the Square will be closed to traffic. Taxis and buses will be allowed in between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. but no later. The Christchurch Transport Board has arranged stops in Hereford Street for those buses which stop in the Square. The Christchurch City Council has asked employers to give workers a chance to attend the walkabout and businesses to fly flags. City residents also have the chance to meet the Queen and Prince Philip at the garden party at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday. The invitation list was opened to anyone who applied. A ballot was held to decide who of the 1200 people who applied

would attend. Six hundred have been Invited.

The Royal couple will also attend a Youth in Action day at Queen Elizabeth II Park, organised by the City Council and youth groups.
