Salmon the only winners
The return of northwest rain to the South Island high country yesterday has forced the organisers of the Daiwa Rakaia River fishing competition to abandon the event. The contest was due to start yesterday but northwest conditions at the
week-end left the river too dirty. The water was clearing nicely, but yesterday afternoon the organisers received a report that the river was rising again. About 350 entries, some of them from the United States and Australia, had
been received. The contest was to end on Sunday. A function will be held at the Rakaia Domain at 2 p.m. this afternoon for the unfortunate entrants whose bids to land some large salmon have been thwarted.
