The Canterbury Cricket Association has
appointed the security firm, Armourguard, to check bags at the entrances to the ground and while the match is in progress. The Lancaster Park Sports Club, which holds the licence for the booth, had sought a ruling enabling two cans to be taken into the stands at a time, but it was declined by the licensing authority. “This is the first time we’ve appointed security personnel,” said the association’s chairman, Mr Brian Adams. “They’re there purely to enforce the ruling on
bringing alcohol in. But we don’t anticipate any trouble.” Police will be inside the ground, both uniformed and plainclothes. Mr Adams said the association wanted to “be prepared” if any incidents should happen. “We don’t want a repetition of what happened two years ago,” added Mr Adams, in reference to the Eng-land-New Zealand oneday game, when a spectator ran on to the field and held up play for some minutes.
