Pupils chosen for halley's Comet watch
PA Wellington The 50 pupils to visit the Halley’s Comet international watchsite at Omarama in April have now been chosen, said the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, yesterday. Led by Mr Tony Fisher, a Wellington science adviser, and Mr Frank Andrews, of the Carter Observatory, the tour will spend three study nights at the watchsite from April 5 to 9.
Mr Marshall said the Form 1 and 2 pupils, all of whom had a proved interest in astronomy, would work at the watchsite with scientists with international reputations. BP New Zealand, Ltd, under its Challenge to Youth programme, will meet all travel, study, and accommodation costs for the 50 pupils. The pupils chosen are:
Whangarei district - Jeremy Muir and Andre Lovatt. Auckland district Jason Harris, Keith Wansborough, Michael Palmer, Richard Pope, Mark de Vry, Thomas Coup, Martin Fryer, Kevin Worrall, Bryce Boland and AnneMarie Nilsson.
Tauranga district Bruce Parkinson, Stephen
Donnelly, Robbie Wylie, Zoe Pearson and Justin Simms.
Rotorua district - Susan Wheeler and Jason Koppe. New Plymouth district - Ruel Newsome, Richard Austin and Dominic Winter.
Gisborne district - Hinerapa Pere and Michael Shepherd. Napier district - Alpha Hunt and Steven Th waites.
Wellington district - Malcolm Brown, Kirsty Cameron, Daniel Stone, Ainky Krishnarajah, Amanda Miller and Louise Thomson.
Blenheim district - Robert Anderson, Lynley Moorhouse and Hamish Oswald.
Nelson district - Nigel Beatson. Hokitika district Marcus Clyne. Westport district - Isaac Freeman.
Canterbury district ■ John Bbrrie, Martin Weiford, Carey Bird, Robert Urquart and Mason Griffiths.
Otago district - Benjamin Hill and Dion Murphy.
Southland district Michael Hankey, Fraser Kennedy and Andrew Salter. _
