A special course to help young people become aware of self-help, communication, and awareness skills has been developed by the Y.W.C.A. The course leader, Mr
Nigel Jones, , says the emphasis is on helping young people take more responsibility for themselves.
“We hope to equip them with some life-long skills and a greater sense of self-respect, and thereby lessen dependence on the welfare system.”
The course was designed after the Y.W.C.A. held a discussion on the problems facing young people, including unemployment, crime, and drug abuse.
“We want to emphasise that many problems can
be solved, worked through and lessened by their own efforts. Our aim is to help people help themselves.” Fourteen pupils from Burnside High School will take part in the first course, which is being run as a pilot scheme.
Activities on the course, which include rafting, are designed to provide a range of feelings and emotions to stimulate active participation and discussion for three workshop sessions. Each course will include a similar type of physical activity.
Tlj? three workshops,
concentrating on self-con-fidence, relaxation, and communication, will draw from the previous day’s experience for physical and emotional reactions.
Structured experiences, involving games and exercises will also be used.
