AUSTRALIA Oils drag market down sharply

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed sharply easier yesterday; oil stocks leading the way down after the Federal Government’s cut in fuel prices and profit-taking in industrial stocks. At the close of trading the allordinaries index had lost 14.4 points to 1047.4, the all-industrials index 10.3 points to 1632.0, and the all-resources index 16.8 points to 601.6. The gold index fell 2.1 points to 926.5.

Turnover was a high 59.4 M shares- worth sAustll6.4M; falls outnumbering rises 239 to 221.

Shares in Industrial Equity dropped 50c to 680 after the announcement that the Victorian Supreme Court had ruled that a block of North Broken Hill shares claimed by lEL should be sold. NBH shares lost 23c to 235 and Brierley Investments fell 40c to 520.

The fall in oil prices put pressure on BHP, which fell 16c to 654 after reaching a year’s low of 650 early in the day. About 1.7 M shares were traded.
