Publisher sacks 700
NZPA-PA London The Scottish “Daily Record” failed to appear yesterday after the publisher, Mr Robert Maxwell, sacked 220 journalists and 500 print workers on the “Record” and “Sunday Mail.”
Production of the “Record” was halted on his instructions just after
9.30 p.m. Sunday, local time. The sackings came after journalists and print workers refused to produce a new full-colour Irish edition of the "Daily Mirror” at the Anderston Quay plant in Glasgow. National Union of Journalists representatives at the “Record” denied they had broken a solemn
promise to produce the Irish edition and said it : was “crazy” for Mr Max- : well to dismiss people for • working normally. Last week the publisher ' announced plans to proi duce a new newspaper for the north of England at his Glasgow printing t centre. r But this scheme was i scrapped
