I.R.A. gunman shot
NZPA-PA , Belfast
An I.R.A. gunman has been shot dead by soldiers during an attack on a security base in Londonderry. The hooded terrorist’s body was found slumped behind the wheel of a stolen car which crashed
when troops opened fire after a gun attack on Fort George, a joint Army and police base in the Republican Shantallow area. He was named as Patrick Tony Gough, aged 24, who lived in Shantallow. The I.R.A. admitted
he was one of its volunteers.
Another man was arrested and a gun recovered, said a police spokesman. A heavy burst of gunfire had been directed at Fort George from the car, forcing passers-by to dive for cover.
Moments later, as the car sped away, an Army patrol emerged from a side street and opened fire, killing Gough instantly. The car was registered in the Irish Republic and had been hijacked in Londonderry earlier in the
evening. The I.R.A. man was the second person to be killed by the Army in County Londonderry within a week. Last Tuesday Francis Bradley, aged 20, was shot near Toomebridge. Yesterday, surgeons were fighting to save the sight of a policeman injured in a bomb explosion in Armagh. The Royal Ulster Constabulary man’s heavily armoured patrol car was destroyed by a large device as it travelled through a housing estate in the early hours of the morning. ________
