Surplus doctors in Aust.
PA Auckland Australia’s surplus doctors are looking with envy at New Zealand’s improved working conditions, said the former president of the Auckland Resident Medical Officers’ Association, Dr Jeremy Cooper, yesterday. Australia had “overproduced by 50 per cent and was facing a severe problem,” he said. More doctors could come here to work, as the new reduced roster hours were being studied with envy by the Australians. Australian ■ hospitals seemed prepared to pay overtime rather than cut the hours doctors work, Dr Cooper said. Some Auckland junior doctors were still working more than the 72 hours a week limit, he said. But more frequent breaks for sleep and rest was reducing the pressures on doctors.
