Greater aid for overseas sought
PA Wellington The Council for International Development has called on the Government to increase funding for overseas aid.
“It is now second to bottom among O.E.C.D. countries,” the council
The 16-member council, set up last year, includes the Y.W.C.A., World Vision, Corso, V.S.A., Trade Aid, and the United Nations Association. Labour policy had stated an aim of reaching an internationally agreed aid target of 0.7 per cent of gross national product, the council said. But New Zealand’s funding of overseas de-
velopment assistance had continued to fall, reaching 0.25 per cent of G.N.P. in this financial year. Assistance could increase living standards in developing countries which in turn would provide trading opportunities. The council said it was aware of the pressures on Government spending. But New Zealanders had shown over the last year that they recognised their responsibility "to share our plenty.” “the council hopes the Government will see the raising of overseas development assistance funds as a priority in developing its next Budget,” it said.
